At the beginning of the school year, an 8th grade student at Kenilworth Science and Technology School asked me if City Year could help him plan a project to repaint the outdoor basketball courts for Junior Beta Club.  He told me, “As soon as my teacher said that I needed to get 5 hours of community service this semester, I knew exactly who I should go to…City Year!”

We worked together to write a proposal and practice how he would present his idea to the administration at KST.  When the day came to share his proposal, we went to the superintendent’s office to present his ideas.  The project was approved by the school with excitement!  Without wasting any time, our City Year team got to work to plan this project.

Just like PITW #13 (bing) says, “Every Important Task Gets a Team”, and our team for this task just so happen to be our amazing #CYVillage comprised of AmeriCorps members, Senior AmeriCorps members, Impact Directors, students, teachers, administrators, City Year Alumni, friends, and family.   This amazing #CYVillage came together on Sunday, November 12 for a day of service, pizza, and fun.  It was amazing to witness such a diverse group of people come together to beautify a school that has such a special place in my heart.

When we returned back to school on Monday, the students were excited to see the transformation of the outdoor basketball courts (even though we were only able to finish half of the project!).  I asked one student that came out to help, “What was it like to do service at your school?”  She said, “It felt pretty great to be able to do something nice to our school.  I feel really proud whenever I see the work I helped out with.  I hope this paint lasts for a really long time because it makes the courts look nice!”

Thank you to everyone that helped make this KST Day of Service a HUGE success!  Our students now have a safe and beautiful place to play basketball outside.  They say, “It takes a village to raise a child,” but I say, “It takes a #CYVillage to paint a basketball court”!
