City Year national co-founder and CEO Michael Brown and City Year Boston Executive Director and Vice President Sandra Lopez Burke issued this statement today in response to the passing of Boston’s beloved Mayor Thomas M. Menino.
“The City Year community is deeply saddened by the passing of Mayor Thomas Menino, a giant of civic leadership. Mayor Menino believed in the idealism of young people and their capacity to build a stronger city of Boston. He made our neighborhoods brighter, gave our young people a sense of purpose and pride, and ultimately challenged us to help all children of this city reach their full potential. We thank Mayor Menino for giving of himself so deeply to this city, to the people who make it thrive, and to the children who will undoubtedly benefit from his legacy. We will miss the deep connection he maintained with our corps members—he never missed a chance to encourage a red jacketed corps member, or thank our corps for their dedication to this great city. A leader of historic proportions, Mayor Menino was the ultimate role model, showing Bostonians the enormous value of selfless leadership, love of community, and service. Our heart goes out to the Menino family. We will forever be grateful for his vision and leadership.”
