Marking its 15th anniversary, the Westgate Resorts Foundation held a grantee celebration in October, awarding $1 million in grants to non-profits – the largest amount ever recorded in the charity’s history. City Year Orlando (CYO) was honored and excited to participate and attend the event. Thanks to the generous support from Westgate Resorts’ charitable agency, CYO received a $15,000 grant that will sustain funding for the 68 AmeriCorps members serving students at seven Orange County Public Schools during the 2016-17 school year.
The "Strong Families, Strong Workforce" theme ran throughout the event and was attended by hundreds of non-profit and community leaders as well as Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and David Siegel, President & Chief Executive Officer of Westgate Resorts.
To date, owing to the charity of individuals and businesses such as Westgate Resorts Foundation, more than 300 AmeriCorps members have served academically-challenged schools in Orlando while delivering focused interventions in attendance, behavior, math and English. “With Westgate Resorts Foundation's support, we'll be able to reach even more young people who are struggling and need that extra attention," said Jordan C. Plante, Vice President and Executive Director of City Year Orlando.
