On Friday and Saturday, September 15 and 16, we launched our 29th year of service in Boston with our annual celebration of service, Red Jacket Weekend! We welcomed over 500 champions, alumni, volunteers, and family members to celebrate City Year Boston’s 289 new AmeriCorps members.

Friday: Our 289 AmeriCorps members took the City Year pledge at our Opening Ceremony in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. President Kennedy’s legacy of service provided the perfect backdrop for the next generation of AmeriCorps members to take the City Year pledge.

Our Executive Director, Sandra Lopez Burke, thanked our new corps for their courageous commitment to idealism and serving the students of Boston.  Senior AmeriCorps member Sarah Zaragoza-Smith stole the show as she imparted a few pieces of advice to the new corps.

"One, before you seek for help, offer it; two, look out for your teammates; and three, when you coach your students to praise themselves, remember to be kind to yourself."

- Senior AmeriCorps member Sarah Zaragoza-Smith's words of advice to the new corps

Steve Hackley, a City Year Boston Board member and Senior Vice President of the Northeast Division of Comcast Business, and Rob Consalvo, Chief of Staff of Boston Public Schools, delivered remarks as well. Our ceremony closed with Marissa Rodriguez ‘08, ‘09, of the City Year Boston Alumni Board, leading the corps in the City Year pledge.

That same night we hosted over 250 of our alumni and school partners at Fenway Park for our Alumni and Champions Reception. Guests enjoyed Fenway Franks and hung out with Wally the Green Monster as they reunited with old teammates and made new connections.

Saturday: Our Boston Civic Engagement team led a service day at the James Condon K-8 School in South Boston for 75 current AmeriCorps members and over 140 volunteers. This incredible team of volunteers spent the morning beautifying the library and hallways of the Condon school so that it reflects the energy and spirit of the children who attend it. Thank you to all of our champions, school partners, alumni, families, and friends who attended Red Jacket Weekend. You made it what it was: a celebration, commitment to, and recommitment to service. Check out the pictures from all three events on our Smugmug. Stay engaged with City Year Boston by following us on Twitter and Instagram or check out our Events page
