A new City Year is upon us, and with it we welcome our new corps members!
On Monday, our entire site participated in our Corps Kickoff Service Event, because what better way is there to start a year of service? Corps members and staff rolled up their sleeves at Philips Academy High School to take part in numerous painting and construction activities to boost student’s enthusiasm for learning!

Thanks to all of our alumni who came out to our Corps Kickoff Service Event!
After the service event concluded, our staff grilled up lunch for corps members and we used the rest of the afternoon getting to know one another in the neighboring park.
The Kickoff was a great chance for members to get introduced to one another and begin forming their own community
Although these young idealists are eager to get into the schools and begin working, they’ll spend the next 6 weeks involved in training.
These trainings are designed to prepare our members for every aspect of their year of service, including; the history of AmeriCorps, respect in the workplace, introduction to our Whole School Whole Child (WSWC) model, and our partnership with Chicago Public Schools.

We’re also using this time to build up our City Year Chicago community. To close out their first week, corps members are participating in a city-wide scavenger hunt, which is designed to get them comfortable using public transportation all throughout the city!
Although classes don’t start for another month, corps members visited some of the schools that they’ll be working in. Even though every corps member may not be able to physically visit every school throughout their year of service, this scavenger hunt allows them to visit multiple schools and communities along with their peers.
It was a very eventful first week for the new corps members, and we’re excited to see (and share) what the rest of the year has in store!
