On October 16, 2015, the 2015 -16 class of AmeriCorps members nationwide joined together for Opening Day, an opportunity to welcome new AmeriCorps members in a national swearing-in pledge ceremony.
Northeast Ohio AmeriCorps members met at the Great Lakes Science Center and City Year Cleveland kicked off the event with its Second Year AmeriCorps members performing a powerful Physical Training or PT demonstration and engaging the entire audience in a motivation check! City Year PT is a tool used to unit groups as one City Year community, getting our minds and bodies ready for service. The program showcased the various AmeriCorps groups in the Cleveland area and William “Bill” Basl, Executive Director of the Washington Commission for National and Community Service, led the new class in the AmeriCorps pledge.
Karimah Williams, a City Year Cleveland AmeriCorps member who proudly serves at George Washington Carver STEM Elementary School shared why she serves at the event.
“Not only am I a Cleveland Metropolitan School District product, my mission is to advocate and to create equitable academic environments which enrich and uplift urban communities,” Karimah Williams.
More than 1,300 AmeriCorps members pledged to serve in communities across Ohio.
