On Monday, January 9, 2017, City Year Cleveland hosted its inaugural Opportunity Fair! Twelve organizations joined City Year and connected with 68 AmeriCorps members. As part of their workforce and professional development training, the Opportunity Fair exposed City Year AmeriCorps members to many opportunities for career and graduate school after they complete their year of service. The focus was on City Year nonprofit partners working to address social service needs and education inequities locally as well as, nationally. In addition, the event provided AmeriCorps members with networking experience and time to explore different programs and organizations in a myriad of fields.
Participating organizations included: Teach for America, Breakthrough Schools, the Museum of Natural History, SAGA Innovations, Urban Teachers, Wingspan, University of Akron School of Social Work, Case Western Reserve University’s Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, Beechbrook, Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, Ohio Guidestone and the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center.
One AmeriCorps member, Heather Williams, said, "I didn't expect the Opportunity Fair to apply to me as I'm most likely not pursuing a career in education in the long term. I was pleasantly surprised to talk to representatives of organizations looking to hire professionals with backgrounds like ours for other positions bridging the gap between what people need and what the system is built to provide."
The organizations gave our City Year AmeriCorps members rave reviews, mentioning how professional and prepared they were. One attendee said, "The candidates! They presented themselves very well, asked great questions, and many would be a great fit for our social service positions."
