City Year Mission and History
City Year Cleveland is an education-focused organization fueled by national service that partners with public schools in high-poverty communities to help keep students in school and on track to graduate. Powered by AmeriCorps members who serve as tutors, mentors and role models in Cleveland public schools, we help students improve their Attendance, Behavior, and Coursework.
Every 31 seconds a student drops out of high school in the U.S. – totaling nearly 1 million students per year (EPE Center for Research, 2013). While the district’s graduation is trending upwards to 69% from 66% the prior year, it is still far below the state’s average of 82%.
By focusing on the educational needs of high-poverty schools and harnessing the collective power of our AmeriCorps members, we are an essential partner with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) to implement the Cleveland Plan to transform student achievement. City Year’s Whole School Whole Child program (WSWC) places highly-trained, full-time AmeriCorps members in low-performing schools to provide customized interventions for off-track students and wraparound programs for the whole school. At City Year, we believe every child has the potential to be successful in life through the power of education.
