City Year New Hampshire

The largest city in New Hampshire and one of the fastest-growing cities in New England, Manchester is up-and-coming, honoring its manufacturing roots while spurring new growth and development.

Serving in New Hampshire

While New Hampshire is widely known as a vibrant center for academia, business, tech and medicine, some students face significant challenges every day, particularly in Manchester.

Service at City Year goes beyond teaching math facts or new vocabulary words. Service is about believing in our students with everything we have. Service is about helping them believe in themselves.

Your corps experience

City Year is a key partner in creating equitable learning opportunities for all students and developing the city’s future leaders. AmeriCorps members support teachers and staff in delivering instruction that serves the development of the whole child and is responsive to the diverse racial, cultural and linguistic needs of New Hampshire youth. The Manchester School District serves more than 14,000 students across 22 schools; more than 58% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, while in the schools City Year serves over 74% of students are eligible.

With more than 76% of students tutored by AmeriCorps members last year improving their test scores, AmeriCorps members are truly making an impact. A close-knit community with ample opportunities to develop meaningful personal and professional relationships, Manchester is an ideal place to serve. By engaging students, families and community organizations, City Year helps the Manchester School District achieve its mission to inspire and empower all learners with the knowledge, skills, and experiences essential for them to reach their greatest potential. We support our students and communities with academics, social-emotional growth, and making learning enjoyable and accessible for the whole family. As a result, the Manchester community has come to know City Year as a source of care, support, and empowerment.

Serving in New Hampshire schools

Serve in one of five elementary and middle schools throughout the city of Manchester.

Our partner schools serve New Hampshire’s most diverse student population and, despite being under-resourced, try to provide students with as many opportunities as possible to reach their fullest potential. Several schools are a part of the Manchester Community Schools Project, and in recent years many of our schools have joined the Leader in Me program to support students and faculty alike in their leadership and holistic well-being. Students arrive at school every morning via bus, walking, car drop-off, or the City Year-led ‘walking bus.’ Our AmeriCorps members play an important role in Manchester schools, from enthusiastically greeting students as they arrive in the morning to running enriching afterschool clubs as part of 21st Century.

Work with a committed and diverse group of City Year AmeriCorps members who share your passion for service and personal growth.

When you serve in the New Hampshire corps, you become a part of our beloved community. That means you are welcomed to be your fullest self, to step out of your comfort zone, and to make meaningful and lasting connections with each other. At City Year New Hampshire, we focus on building a community of support for our AmeriCorps members by starting every day of service together as a full corps, meeting weekly for Learning & Development training days, holding monthly community meetings, taking extreme pride in our City Year culture and site values, and more. In addition, once you graduate, you become part of our alumni community and have opportunities to come back to support the current corps, take advantage of social, professional and personal networking options, and stay involved in the City Year New Hampshire family.

Professional development

At City Year New Hampshire, our staff, alumni, and community of supporters are dedicated to your professional growth and development. In addition to the support you receive from your Impact Managers and Service Leaders, we provide a variety of resources, workshops and events dedicated to helping you succeed in whatever career you’re interested in.

Our Mentor Program will match you with a professional from the community to help you build professional networks, provide insight into particular fields or industries, or to just be a supportive sounding board. Every year our alumni community hosts 18-Minute Networking, an event where you can meet and learn from dozens of our alumni who have gone on to work in a variety of different fields. Our partners at Comcast NBCUniversal host Comcast Career Day annually to provide a variety of workshops and sessions on everything from resume writing to professional goal setting. Finally, our Learning & Development department regularly brings in resources from the community and other national service programs to address whatever professional development goals you may have. If you can dream it, we’re ready to help you get there.

Community involvement

Create a positive climate of high expectations and engagement that ripples throughout the greater New Hampshire community.

As a leader in service and volunteerism, City Year New Hampshire partners with community organizations, nonprofits, and other national service programs to improve our city and our state. You can regularly find us engaged in community-improving service projects, such as beautifying Parker-Varney Elementary School on Comcast Cares Day, sorting clothes at Families in Transition’s OutFITers Thrift Store, packaging meals with Old Sol Alliance, canvassing with Manchester Proud, or hosting hundreds of community and national service members from across the state at our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. We are proud to partner with so many incredible organizations that deliver excellent results for our New Hampshire community.
