“Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'what are you doing for others?” This well-known quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one that calls us to self-reflect on what it is we do to serve others. One of Dr. King’s great hopes was, not only, for us to come together as a nation regardless of race but that we also help our fellow man. On Jan. 15, 2018, various organizations and businesses around the Orlando community did just that by gathering at Trotters Park for a day of service.
City Year Orlando, in partnership with Wells Fargo, was joined by Keep Orlando Beautiful, Teach for America, Travelers Insurance, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida, Full Sail, Starbucks Coffee Company and Alpha Kappa Alpha to enhance one of Orlando’s beloved parks. The projects for the day included tree planting, mulching, weed removal and fence painting. The event brought out approximately 400 people, including 75 of our own staff and AmeriCorps members. Also in attendance were Derek Jones, Region President of Central Florida at Wells Fargo & Co, and Commissioner Robert Stuart of the Orlando City Council.

Keeping the park beautiful as well as having the community come together was a sight that meant a lot to Commissioner Stuart. “Today is a great day of service and we’re thrilled about the opportunity to serve, but we’re more thrilled about 400 people coming out and helping us make one of our great city parks even better. It’s good to have City Year Orlando and Wells Fargo, as the lead, here and it’s great to have citizens from the general community come out and join us. I’m honored that they would come out and devote their time to the real meaning of what MLK wanted to do in terms of serving others.”

Mr. Jones reflected on the reason for giving back saying, “It’s to honor the legacy of Dr. King through service because you can always honor it by words, but being out here, joined together and doing the right thing for our community, helping to make Orlando a beautiful place-it’s beautiful already, but there’s areas that we can do even more work and just give back-it feels good doing that. At Wells Fargo, one of the things that is core to our vision and values is giving back to the community. We also love partnering with City Year Orlando because you guys are outstanding.”

As we celebrate Dr. King’s memory and sacrifice, almost 50 years later, Ali’s shirt (pictured below on right) reminds us of the seeds he planted in our minds: “everybody can be great because everybody can serve.”
