City Year Sacramento AmeriCorps Member Returns to Serve His Alma Mater
“It makes me happy that I’m able to help kids like me open their minds and find the courage to explore different options.” - Deveon Smith, City Year Sacramento AmeriCorps member and Fern Bacon alum
Reflections on my Service
"For the first time in my life I felt a passion for education. This has driven me to build strong relationships with my students, seeking to understand their own stories and what drives them in life. Every day I show up to service, unsure of what to expect from my students, but knowing they each have their own light, we just have to figure out how to get it to shine brightest."
Empathy from Students
"As City Year AmeriCorps members, we are often in a unique position to model empathy for our students. I think that one of the most valuable things I provide for the students I serve is the consistent presence of a caring adult." - Chloe Williamson
